New vs. Old

So I haven't posted in a while (almost a year actually *laughs nervously*), so I decided to get back to blogging and post some of the more recent art that I've done. I hope to start posting once a week from now on. I actually went on a month exchange to Beijing, so I have some artwork to post from there too.

This is a piece that I recently finished. It's acrylic on canvas. I made this piece to explore the idea of new vs. old. New is innovative and more comfortable, while things that are old hold memories and are often hard to leave behind. As a little child I read a fairytale that was about an old house on a new street, the story was wonderfully personified . Here's the link if you want to read it http://hca.gilead.org.il/old_hous.html . The painting is loosely based on that story.  I tried to use more somber dark colors in the old part of the painting and stick to the primary colors in the new part. An interesting technique I wanted to note was one I used in the upper right hand corner. Most people that have tried painting before have heard of using salt, but usually with watercolor. However, if you water down acrylic and sprinkle it with salt then wait for it to dry, it also gives a very interesting effect.

So that's all for now, I'm currently working on four other pieces, yikes, but I'll regularly post new or old stuff that I finished in the last year.
